Some weather stations in the Atacama have never recorded rain. That emptiness makes it a landscape of pure geology — dune and salt and rust, standing in for Mars in film and in NASA's tests. And because no cloud and no city light reaches it, the world's great telescopes gather here under a sky where the Milky Way is bright enough to read by.
